Default Aviano/EFMP

Just want a little insight from someone that may have been at this longer than me and this may be a little long to explain.

In 2005 we were in Germany where they found out I needed a kidney transplant and was med-evac back to the states so since them my husband has been "q coded" (i think that's what he called it) I'm on my second transplant and have been great for 2 years. Today he received an email stating that he got orders to Aviano! I'm wondering what the chances are that they might actually accept me there w/ my EFMP status!! From what i've read it doesn't look good but with him being coded I don't understand why they would even offer him the orders if they couldn't take me.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'd say small. They definitely don't have a kidney specialist at Aviano. They do have great doctors off base, but they don't usually throw that in the mix for OCONUS. You would have to go to Landstuhl to get followup care.

A q code doesn't keep him from getting an assignment. So you can at least try to get the paperwork done and see what they say.

Thank you for your response. I'm really hoping that their internal medicine group will be able to help me. I've been stable over 2 years so we shall see. Doc appt next week to fill out papers!

Good luck! If you can do your follow up with a regular doctor (internal medicine) you may be okay. I had ovarian cancer and I got approved to Alaska even though they don't have a gynecological oncologist because I can followup with a GYN. A lot will depend on what doctors they say you need to see and what tests they have to run.

I figured as much. We were in Germany in 2005 when I found out about my kidney failure and they told me had it not been for the war and Landstuhl being a major part of that that they probably could have handled me but that they were limited to only injured soldiers and minor things so we shall see. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and trying to not get too excited. We've just been here in DC since 05 and i'm so ready to be somewhere else, can't think of a better place but Italy!

I guess DC would be a step up! You're trying to get North and I want to get South if we have to stay in the states!

DC is one of those you want it, then you get there and hate it and then when you leave you are so sorry you wanted to go. The traffic is killer but the area and VA is beautiful and so much to do. The traffic is the most god awful thing though ugh.

Good luck OP!

I lived there for a summer and its probably where DH is going to retire. I have a degree in history so it would be great for me job wise.

I just called Dermatology at Landstuhl clinic and the lady told me that if the orders are dropped you should be fine because they review you stuff before they even drop orders. We have only been selected for this assignment though, we dont have the official orders yet

My husband told me to go ahead and get it started since my condition is a little crazy (altho since the transplant i'm perfectly normal, doesn't really feel like a "condition") I think if I do it now I may have to get it done again. I already had my 3 month follow up scheduled for tomorrow so figured I would take the papers in. But yes i do know what you mean...my husband has always said he joined to travel and yes we've done alot on our own but it would be nice for him not to be stuck in the same place he grew up!

Unfortunately the person you spoke with at Landstuhl was wrong. That's not how it works in the AF. AFPC gives the member an assignment and then the member and his family have to get medical clearance before they cut hard orders.
