I have managed to lose my ID. I don't use it all that often and I don't even need it right now and won't be home to go to pass & ID for another 2-3 weeks. No big deal. So I thought... But a friend just told me that if DH doesn't get me a POA or go with me to get a new one immediately, that he can get in really big trouble. He doesn't have time to get a POA and mail it to me (now sure how I'd get on base without an ID to use it anyway), and I'm obviously not home to go in with him. Can he really get in trouble for this? If he can, what am I supposed to do? |

I did this, and I lived on post at the time! I can share my experience with it, but as you know, the military doesn't ever seem to do things the same way twice LOL!
You can get on post with just a driver's license or other ID (if you drive, you will have to go through the inspection process and have your insurance and registration ready). Anyone can get on base if they are willing to wait through the process. I had to wait for Chris to send me a specific POA from Iraq, it was a PITA for him to do over there, and it took a little over a month. He did not get in any trouble as I did not make it a habit to lose my ID. They would not accept a general POA. Once I had that, I went to the the DEERS location on post and they issued a new ID to me. That part was pretty painless. They just wouldn't do anything without the POA that specifically stated I could get a replacement ID. |

I don't see why he'd get in trouble if you don't have an ID card. You're still enrolled in DEERS which is the regulatory requirement. Is your husband deployed? If you have a General POA, give the ID Card section a call and see if they'll take that. I was able to use a General POA to get and ID card for my son that just turned 10.

If you have a sticker, just show drivers license. If no sticker, get a guest pass. My ID was confiscated once at the entry gate (the lamination was coming apart). My son was in the hospital at Ft. Sam and we were stationed at Hood. Hubby was in Iraq. That was the most stressful time! I was told the ID desk only gave me a new one because the guy felt sorry for me but normally you have to have a special POA. Just a heads up, hubby said if one is lost it should be reported to the MPs so it doesn't come back on the soldier.

And say I just can't get a new ID? The issue isn't getting a new one, it's getting him in trouble if I don't. Because I simply can't figure out how to do it right now. |

I don't think you will get him in trouble for NoT having one-just if you told his COC he wouldn't help you obtain one. Just call the MP station at the installation y'all are stationed at

I don't know if it's the same everywhere but when you lose an ID you need to report it to the MP's and then bring the report to the ID place when you get a new one. That's what my friend had to do.

You should, technically, report it to the MPs. Every installation has its own policies, but at Ft Riley and Ft Campbell when I was there, in order to get a new ID card, you had to have proof of reporting it.
I don't think he can get in trouble, per se, other than it just looks bad on him. |

ID's get lost. It's a given. If your sponsor or his dependents are routinely losing their ID's, then it becomes a problem. I highly doubt your sponsor is going to get in any trouble because his spouse lost her ID once.

he won't get into trouble, you are required to report it as lost,
you do not need an ID card to do much. The only issue I see is if you have a medical emergency and not having your ID will cause some billing issues with tricare and the ER/Acute care. |

It depends upon the branch of service if you must report it to the MPs or SPs. It also depends upon the branch and the Command if your spouse will be in trouble for it.
I've seen some soldiers in Germany who provided me with letters from the command before they could get a new ID or for their family. I've also turned away people who have tried to renew their cards before their time. Dependents dont need to have the same rank as the sponsor. However, the sponsor MUST have the correct rank on their ID and uniform. If you are near any kind of military installation you can get it replaced without going back to where your DH is stationed. You will need to call the ID office closest to you and ask what they require to get an ID without the sponsor. Some take a POA, some require a specific ID card POA. You will need proof of ID at least 1 with a photo of yourself. And some places require an appoitment and possibly a letter or notice from the MPs or SPs of you reporting your ID lost. |

Geez....I don't even have the POA with me.
I'm pretty sure it's at home and got left while I was cleaning out my wallet while packing, but of course DH is too busy for look for it. So I'm wary of reporting it "lost" since while it's lost, it's probably lost in my house. Or car. Or suitcase. Guess I'll just deal with it when I get back. If they don't like it, well...darnit, I have a life and responsibilities too. |

is the process to replace a stolen ID different than if it expires (or is expiring) or getting a new one?
I've never needed a POA to get a new ID, just that he fill out DD1172... |

The requirement for a new ID card is the same regardless as far as authorization goes. You either need a POA, a signed DD1172 by the Sponsor or the Sponsor present at the issuing facility.
