I always thought they had to be, but I didn't see anything on the jar that said "refrigerate after opening" or whatever. Of course, being from Houston, I thought that butter HAD to be refrigerated until I married a Yank.

I don't think so. We do but I like cold pickles.
Cheese doesn't HAVE to be in the fridge either |

My family in Montana keep butter in the cabinet. I was like what?!?!? Haha. We've always kept it in the fridge and I didn't know you even could leave it out!

It depends, most of the ones you buy from the store shelves have preservatives that keep bacteria from growing, those don't have to be. Others that you find in the refrigerated sections are stored with just water and spices, and those do need to be refrigerated. Basically store them the way you found them in the store. I like them cold so we store our in the fridge anyway.
I'm from Houston too. Butter goes in the fridge, otherwise it becomes a melted mess

You don't have to keep eggs in the fridge either.

Being that they come out of a chicken's butt warm, I'd say no.

It's truly an American thing. I remember American roommates I had gawking at all the eggs on regular shelves in the shops around Ireland. They had no idea.

They do last longer though by sticking them in the fridge. But we tend to buy them in larger amounts then just a few at a time. Americans tend to shop less often than Europeans.

I guess I never really thought about it. I always put my eggs, butter and pickles in the fridge. My mom leaves her butter out and it drives me nuts.

I keep my small jars of pickles in the fridge because I like those cold, but my big huge pickles in my big huge jar sits on my counter top at all times. I love big pickles! I love pickles in general.

I keep pickles and eggs in the fridge. We usually have one stick of butter out because I hate putting cold butter on my toast.
