Question Looking for some creative suggestions

Hubby and I are off for a week to the woods for ATVing and we are bringing NO KIDS.

That said, we are staying in a very primitive cabin. No fridge, no stove, micro...zilch. I can cook over the fire and we have a small propane stove, but very limited cold storage.

I am looking for some NON-KID food that are easy to cook and don't require many foods that need refrigeration or much prep work. I have to bring everything with us and still have to manage washing everything. I already have some things planned, but some additional ideas would be great.

Also, most of our lunches will likely be in the middle of a ride. We have a cooler that fits on the back of my ATV, so we will have that, but nothing that requires cooking is the lunch food rule.

Suggestions? TIA

Check out some of the nicer tuna steaks and such that are flavored. I had a lemon pepper albacore steak the other day that was pretty darn good on my salad and it was pre-packaged and didn't need refrigeration.

There are also the rice packets and such that cook in 90 seconds in the microwave. Really you could put the contents in a foil packet and just heat them, the rice is parboiled. Potatoes are also a good starch that doesn't need refrigerated, just foil wrap and stick in some coals.

Pancake mixes that don't need eggs are good for breakfast if you have a small skillet, as is the pre-cooked bacon if you have some cold storage for after you open it. You can always have bacon sandwiches too if you're afraid you won't use it in time.

Here are some other ideas:

I would literally die....the cabin we stayed in in BB had everything, microwave, stove/oven, big fridge, ac and heat the whole 9 yards and I actually got a little freaked cause I still felt like I was roughing it!

No thank you, we have those things weekend after weekend after weekend when we camp with the kids. This is adults only and I refuse to have anything with any remote association with kid food.

Thanks for the links. I was just on chow.com and there were some good things there. We are doing potatoes and a dish with the boil-in-bag rice, so I can use the same water to finish cooking after the rice is done.
Thanks for the suggestion about the tuna, I am a huge Tilapia fan, so maybe we can have that day one or two so we don't have to worry to much about keeping it cold. I have some of the prepackaged that you were talking about, for lunch with some fresh tomatoes.

Sounds good! I was going to ask how much you had in the way of fresh veggies and such that were options. I typically do asparagus with a little olive oil, lemon and fresh garlic, all of which will transport well and you can also do a foil packet this way. Same goes for potatoes, peppers, onions, squash, zucchini, etc. Just depends on how much room you have!

Thanks...I am a HUGE veggie queen,so there WILL be room for those. I also suspect I can find fresh fruits and veges while we are gone. I really just didn't want to do basic camping food...so sick of that kind of stuff, it's what we do with the kids all year 'round. We are big camper people, but with them we have the camper. Of course I have a ton of true roughing it camping, but then it is lots of freeze dried stuff and trail mix stuff....don't want that either for this trip.

I'd go with you! Just got to find a long term sitter for four kids under six. Really though I have always wanted to do that...maybe when dh retires or something we will.

Have a good trip!

I loved hobo dinners:

hamburger, broken into chunks
cut up carrots
cut up potatoes (big chunks are great)
onion
seasoning salt and pepper
all wrapped up in tinfoil (2 layers) and then you throw the packets into the coals of a dieing fire.

My dad could cook anything over a fire, I loved camping with him. He made us spaghetti (jarred ) over the fire once...

I love those sandwich irons. They're not only great for making sandwiches but we love to make breakfast donuts in the morning. It's not exactly "adult" fare but it's yummy! Spray both sides of the irons with Pam (butter flavored is good), take prepackaged biscuits (like Pillsbury in a can), and cook over the fire until well browned. After they're cooked sprinkle some sugar and cinnamon over the top(add more butter if you're a huge butter fan like me) and enjoy with some fresh coffee.

ETA: DH enjoys the flaky type of biscuits best.
