I'm not sure what your price range is, and this is pretty pricey, but it's super cute (and on Babies R Us, but looks like a big kid could use it!)

I think the smartest way to spend money on a desk for a kid is a computer desk with storage. They are hard to find, but available.

I would check out what's available on Craigslist instead of pigeonholing yourself on a specific type.

I work at Officemax and we have a cute desk that is simple and inexpensive, yet very functional

You could try Walmart, Big Lots, Value City Furniture, garage sales, look up furniture stores in your area. I have a 9yr. old girl and my one suggestion is to not spend a lot of money on it. As kids, they don't always take good care of things. You want to get her something nice and will last, but don't go over the top. Also, is she going to help pick it out or are you surprising her? It may be a nice welcoming thing to have a shopping day with you to pick out a new desk for her new room. Not sure how she is or if that is possible. My DD loves shopping and picking out items for her room. Good luck hun.
